Lowering Gas Costs

How To Lower Your Gas Costs

Here are some suggestions to detoursome of the high prices of gas this summer . . .

1. Compare prices. Often stations on main streets or near interstates charge higher prices for their location. Find a low priced gas station that gets high traffic, and fill up there.

2. Don't fill your gas tank to the top; stop when the handle releases and you hear a "click". After pumping, turn the handle around to drain the last few ounces out, so it lands in your car and not on the ground. Every little bit helps.

3. Check your tires to make sure they're properly inflated, and check your oil and other fluids to make sure they're full.

4. If you need to stop for more than a minute (such as at the bank), turn your car off. It takes less gas to turn it off and on again thatn to let it sit there idling.

5. If you're not using your luggage racks, take them off. They create extra drag, and require extra fuel. Clean out your trunk to avoid lugging more than you need.

6. Air conditioning uses up a lot of gas, especially in stoop and go traffice. If you can, open your windows, and save your AC for the dog days of summer.

7. Combine your errands, park and walk, or get out your bike and pedal for small neighborhood trips.

8. Use your cruise control on flat highway terrain that is uncongested to maximize fuel efficiency and lessen fatigue.
